First 4-4-0 Miniature Locomotives

The first four 4-4-0 miniature locomotives built at the park are shown here disassembled in a colony machine shop.  This photograph does not represent the original construction according to Earl Boyersmith (second from the right in the picture), who is still alive and lives close by the Colony to this day (as of December 19, 2003).  Every winter the locomotives and cars had to be overhauled because of the heavy use they received during the tourist season.  Each drive and guide wheel on the locomotives as well as the wheels on the passenger cars had to be machined on lathes to remove flat spots worn during the summer rail service.
