FAQs

Is the Israelite House of David still active?

Yes! A Board of Trustees operates the House of David of which some are members. Today the House of David functions as a historic trust with the mission to preserve and celebrate the commune's unique history.

What is the City of David?

The City of David is the rival colony that broke away from the House of David in 1930.

Following the 1927 death of Benjamin Purnell and growing tensions, Mary Purnell, co-founder of the House of David, left the colony with about half of its members. The rival Christian Israelite commune became Mary's City of David (The Israelite House of David as Reorganized by Mary Purnell).  She remained the revered prophet and undisputed leader of the City of David until her passing in 1953.

Today, the two colonies are still separate organizations, though on much better terms with each other!
